Fungi, plural for fungus, can be found on different parts of the body. Some fungal infections can be very contagious and easily transmitted from person to person. Some types of fungal infections can be quite dangerous if left untreated.
These are some of the common types of fungal infections occurring in people:
Tinea or ringworm is a fungal infection of the hair, skin, or nails. When tinea is on the skin, it usually begins as a small red area the size of a pea. As it grows, it spreads out in a circle or ring. Tinea is often called ringworm because it can look like little worms under the skin, but it is the fungus. These fungi cause tinea (ringworm) on different parts of the body. They are named for the body part they infect. Scalp ringworm is found on the head, and body ringworm affects the arms, legs, or chest. Learn more about tinea in our ringworm article.
Athlete's foot is a fungal infection usually appearing between the toes but also can affect toenails and the bottom or sides of the feet. Recent research also seems to find that this fungus can also be transmitted person to person.
Jock itch is type of fungal infection on the groin and upper thighs. Many fungi ideal growing environments are warm, moist, and wet areas. You might think it only affects males, but females can get it, too.
Candida, a yeast, is similar to a fungus. Candida can affect the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. Diaper rash is another type of candidal infection, this is usually candida albicans. Thrush, white patches often found in the mouths of babies, is also candida. Girls and women may develop a candida infection in or around the vagina. This is called a yeast infection. Studies are indicating that controlling sugar intake can help keep yeast levels in check.
Here are some symptoms of fungal infections or imbalance:
- Sores in the mouth, tongue, and throat, or Thrush
- Yellow, black or brown discoloration, decaying, or splitting toe or fingernails
- Ringworm
- Chronic stuffy nose
- Athlete’s foot
- Vaginal infections
- Unidentified rashes, sores, or irritation
- Inflammation, or irritation of scalp, body, feet, or nails
Some traditional remedies may include harsh chemicals and other methods that often leave infected areas open and exposed to more fungal infections and symptoms. It is important to keep the infected areas clean and dry. Remember, many of these imbalances are occurring on the inside of the body, and can be more effectively treated by getting inside at the source or root of the problem.
