Ring worm is not caused by any type of worm at all. The medical definition of ringworm, or tinea, is a fungal skin infection characterized by ring-shaped, red, scaly, or blistery patches. This fungal infection is caused by a fungus group called dermatophytes that can affect the feet, scalp, skin, fingers, or toe nails of people and pets.Anyone can get ringworm but children and cats can be more susceptible to certain types of ringworm. Pet Ringworm can also infect dogs, ferrets, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs and other animals. These fungal agents can be transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected people or pets. Transmissions can also occur indirectly by contact with contaminated items such as hair clippers, hair or fur from infected people or animals, shower stalls or floors, or dermatophytes in soil.
