Symptoms of GOUT
The main symptoms of gout are pain and swelling, and in about 75 percent of cases it initially affects the joints in the big toe. However, it can also affect the heel, ankle, instep knee, fingers, wrist, elbow and even the spine.
The disease typically progresses through 4 stages that appear as follows:
In the first stage, a person has elevated levels of uric acid in the blood but no other symptoms. In the second stage, the high levels of uric acid have formed crystals that are deposited in the joints. This leads to a sudden onset of intense pain and swelling in the joints that may also feel warm and very tender. Acute attacks commonly occur at night. In the case of early attacks, they usually subside on their own within a few days to a week, and the next attack may not occur for months or even years. The third stage is the period between acute attacks where a person has normal joint function with no pain. Over time though, the attacks can last longer and occur more frequently. The fourth stage is the most disabling where the disease has developed over a long period of time. In this stage, the disease has caused permanent damage to the affected joints and perhaps even the kidneys.
Causes of GOUT
Ultimately, your body can’t deal with and get rid of the high levels of uric acid in the blood. Some factors that put you at risk for gout are:
- Gender, gout is much more common in men than in women
- Genetics, about 20 percent of people have a family history of gout
- Consuming too much alcohol interferes with the removal of uric acid
- Eating too many foods rich in purines such as meat, fish, gravies, cream sauces, fried foods, legumes, eggs and several others
- Being overweight because there is more tissue available for breakdown
- Exposure to lead in the environment
- Certain medications because they reduce the body’s ability to remove uric acid
Treatment of GOUT
There are a few things people with gout can do for themselves to stay healthy. It is important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet and avoid foods that are high in purines. This includes drinking plenty of water because it helps to remove the uric acid from the body. Also, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight.
Despite the medications that a doctor may prescribe, there are natural remedies available for gout that contain all-natural ingredients.
