HIGH BLOOD PRESSUREHypertension, or high blood pressure, usually causes undistinguished or no symptoms and for that reason is known as 'the silent killer'. In order to know if you have high blood pressure, it must be measured with a blood pressure cuff and is recorded as 2 numbers. The top, larger number is called the systolic pressure, this is the pressure generated when the heart pumps and reflects the pressure of the blood against arterial walls. The bottom (smaller) number is called the diastolic pressure which reflects the pressure in the arteries while the heart is filling and resting between heartbeats. Those whose blood pressure is consistently higher than normal are said to have high blood pressure or hypertension.

As many as 1 in 4 adults have high blood pressure which can lead to heart disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.

Although few cases of high blood pressure are caused by another disease (secondary hypertension), the primary cause of high blood pressure is unknown. There are however, several factors that may contribute to hypertension.Genetic factors such as sex, race and age all play a role in the likelihood of developing high blood pressure. Men are more likely to suffer from hypertension than women while African Americans are more affected than caucasians and the onset and subsequent complications begin sooner. As you age, your arteries get stiffer and is generally caused by arteriosclerosis which is hardening of the arteries.

There are however, several causes of high blood pressure that you can control. These factors include weight, alcohol consumption, diet, lack of exercise and birth control or drug (medication) use. Obese people are more likely to develop hypertension, especially those that gain the weight around their belly (apple-shaped people). Drinking more than 2 drinks of alcohol a day can raise blood pressure in those sensitive to alcohol as can certain medications or birth control pills. Diet, including those high in sodium and fat and low in fiber can contribute to the hardening of the arteries, thereby increasing blood pressure. Physical inactivity contributes to the development of obesity and high blood pressure.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE TREATMENT
