Eczema Definition

Atopic dermatitis, otherwise known as eczema, is a broad term of chronic skin conditions categorized by recurring, dry, scaly, itchy rashes. Eczema sufferers often have allergic conditions like asthma, hay fever, or eczema in their family history.

Eczema causes

Eczema is seen most often in infants. At least half of these cases clear up by age 3. Eczema occurring in adults is generally a recurring condition.

What happens with eczema is a hypersensitive reaction in the more superficial (outer) skin layers which can cause chronic inflammation. The resulting inflammation makes the skin dry, scaly, and itchy. When someone constantly scratches at these areas the skin reacts to this stress and becomes thicker and more leathery.

Some things that can worsen eczema symptoms are environmental irritants, dry skin, temperature changes, and stress.

Eczema Symptoms

  • Intense Itching
  • Oozing or crusting blisters
  • Red skin or inflammation
  • Rashes
  • Occurs frequently in creases of elbows and knees
  • Very dry leathery skin areas
  • Can also be seen on hands, feet, neck, eyelids
  • Very raw skin from scratching

A health care professional should diagnosis eczema because it can be difficult to differentiate from other skin disorders.

Eczema TreatmentsEczema Treatments will vary depending on the stage it is in. Dry skin aggravates eczema so good moisturizers are essential to treat eczema. Soothing all natural skin care products can also be good eczema remedies because they are thought to be gentler and penetrate deeper into the dermis. Mild lotions or low potency topical corticosteroids may also soothe less severe lesions. Chronic thick, leathery areas are treated with creams, ointments, or more potent corticosteroids that lubricate and soften the skin and can reduce inflammation.

The latest eczema treatments are steroid free skin medications called TIMS (topical immunomodulators). Recent studies show a success rate as high as an 80% using TIMS.

There is no known cure for chronic eczema at this time, but symptoms can be relieved with soothing treatments and avoiding irritants.

You should consult a health care professional if your eczema symptoms worsen or do not respond to treatment.

Eczema Prevention and Home Remedies

Anything that aggravates eczema symptoms should be avoided if possible. No matter how tempting, Don't Scratch Your Eczema.

A good home remedy for eczema is awareness. Be aware of what skin products you are using, and the foods you are eating. Also be aware of what the stressors in your life are. Food allergens, certain soaps or skin care products, or irritants such as wool and lanolin can all cause eczema flare ups. Dairy products, eggs, peanuts, fish, and soy products have all been linked to certain cases of eczema. Eczema is more likely to run in families. Reduction of stress, anxiety, nervousness, and depression has also been beneficial in cases.

Things to remember in treating eczema: Take good care of your skin; keep it moisturized. Reduce your stress. Use gentle, soothing skin care products, avoid irritants, and Don't Scratch!
