Bursitis, also: olecranon bursitis, trochanter bursitis, patellar bursitis, ischial bursitis, prepatellar bursitisBursitis is inflammation, swelling, pain, or warmth of the fluid-filled sac (bursa) between a muscle and bone, or between a tendon and bone. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs found between a bone and a tendon or a bone and a muscle. The bursa form a type of cushion that assist movement and reduce friction between moving bones, muscles, and tendons.

Bursitis can be caused by chronic overuse, repetitive motions, scar tissue wear, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, infections, or gout. Bursitis commonly occurs in the shoulder joint, knee joint ( prepatellar bursitis ), elbow joint ( olecranon bursitis ), heel ( achilles tendon ), and hip joint ( trochanteric bursitis ). Other joints sometimes affected with bursitis may include the ischial tuberosity, wrist, knuckle, ankle and joints of the foot. Inflammation of the bursa may be acute or chronic meaning the joint inflammation may appear suddenly and worsen rapidly or they can appear gradually over a long period of time. Bursitis and some methods of bursitis treatment ( corticosteroid injections into the joint ) can be extremely painful.Symptoms of bursitis may include inflammation, joint pain and tenderness, swelling near the joint, redness, and warmth of the affected joint.

In certain cases if the inflammation of the bursa does not respond well with the initial treatment, it can be necessary to drain the fluid out of the bursa and inject it with corticosteroids. Bursitis caused by infection is treated with antibiotics. Bursitis responds well to treatment in most cases. Chronic bursitis can occur in stubborn cases and too many steroid injections in too short of time period can cause injury to surrounding tendons.

Bursitis Remedy

Health care professionals may recommend temporary rest or even immobilization of the affected joint until the condition stabilizes. Physical therapy, massage therapy, or rolfing may be helpful as well. Avoid activities that include repetitive movements of body parts if bursitis is affecting you. Movement for the affected area can be started as the pain and symptoms resolve. Icing the area and stretching can be helpful.

Adequate warm up and stretching are good preventative measures for bursa inflammation.
